Blog Homework 3: High school reunions

Hi guys,

Thanks for your comments last week (or was it last last week)? It was interesting to read about the different ways people would respond to this situation of young kinds throwing stones at pigeons. As many of you mentioned, the context and our feelings at the time can often influence how we respond to such situations. Daiki, Satoru, Yuu, Miya and Toru said they would say something to stop the kids. Daiki would ask some nearby adults to stop them or perhaps report them to their school so their school teacher can discipline them. Tohma also noted that it might be difficult to tell them to stop alone. Terumi, Yoko, Haruki and Masayoshi said they would probably keep quiet, thinking in their minds (please stop please stop). Yoko and Mayumi said they would perhaps stare at them or “give them the evil eye”. Masayoshi said that he would probably complain about the situation that night with his family and friends. And Tomohiro by far had the most original solution: screaming like a mad-man to try and scare the pigeons away. Very creative!

Actually, this really happened to me. One day when I was walking past the little park nearby SATY I saw a group of boys throwing stones at some pigeons. So many people, adults included, just walked past them and said nothing. I couldn’t believe it! Not only is it wrong to hurt animals, it’s also dangerous to throw stones – they could hit someone, or even break a window of a nearby house. So, I walked over to these boys and “gave them a lecture”. I told them that they should stop immediately, and that they should think about the consequences of their actions! They were so surprised, that they apologized immediately and ran off!! I’ll never forget this day!

==================================================================

Anyway, on to this week’s blog topic. In the listening exercise today, we heard about people talking about their experiences at high school, and a few characters talked about going to high school reunions. Some characters implied that they would love to go to their high school reunion, while others said that it would be hell. (By the way, when we say a “high school reunion” we mean a formal reunion where all people from the high school are invited. These are normally held every 5 or 10 or so years after graduation).

So I want to know… how would you feel if you got an invitation to your high school reunion? Would you be very happy to go, or would you rather not go. Why? Please write your blog entry by next Tuesday (27th) midnight. Also, please give a brief comment to the person who wrote before you. Finally, please try to write about 150 words (some of your comments last time were a bit too short).

Best Wishes,
Kris

  1. Hi, this is Daiki.

I might feel a bit excited when I get an invitation to my high school reunion, and I would go,looking foward to meet an old friend from high school for the first time in years.

Unlike my junior high school days,I didn't belong to the any club activities(At first I would, but it seemed to be much harder than I had expected),so honesty I had less experienced anything exciting, happy, hard than many of others.

However I don't mean that my high school day was not so good. There are two things I would never forget about my high school days.

First, there were 40 students in one class in my high school ,and there were only 6 boys including me in my class(FOR THREE YEARS!!!).At first I tought that I might leave school in less than a year, because I was very shy and not good at talking with strangers, much less with girls!
In the beginning I actually had diffculty being used to the class. However we boys soon could get along with each other than I had expected, because we could share the same feelings.Less than three months after I enterd high school, wituout realizing it,we were totally used to my class, and got well with the girls.

After being used to high school life, college entrance exams was the next challenge.Preparing for college entrance exams was much harder than I did for high school entrance exams.I felt so worried about wheter I could pass exams or not.
After school I almost always sudied with my class mates in the class room until the time to leave for school. Thanks to them I managed to be this univercity now.Had it not been for them,I might not be in Shimonoseki now.I'm really greatful to them.We went to different univercities each other,so they might tell others about the high school days(spending high school days with only 6 boys and 34girls)as I do now.
Anyway I'm looking foward to meet them for the first time in years.

  2. This is Tomohiro.

Daiki, you had very good experiences in your high school days. I understand how your friends were kind because I had almost same experinces as yours. When I was a senior in my high school, I studied till the time to go home and sometimes talked with my friends about university entrance exam. They were listening to me carefully and helped me so I can not help feeling they are very kind guys.

Some people seem to be unhappy when they get an invitation to a high school reunion. In my brother's case, he was very nervous whey he got an invitation to his high school reunion. Asking him why he hated to participate, he said that many of his friends were not understandable and he feels he can not go along with them, and also he has a lot of unhappy experiences with them; experiences of school journey, school festival and so on.
But different from my brother, there are people who feel happy to receive an invitation to their reunion and many of them seem to have good experiences with friends in their school days. I had a lot of good memories especially in my high school days so no doubt I will feel so happy to go to the reunion.
In my high school days, there was a person whom I can not forget for ever, his name is Mocchan but this is his nickname and I have never asked him his real name; but I still remember his first name "Hikita". Off course, there were other classmates who were very kind or characteristic or funny, but he was an exeption;far more unforgettable than any other classmates. There are three reasons why he is so unforgettable.
First, he was my best wall. I guess no one finds what this wall means. In this case, this wall means that he will be wall and hide me from the teacher who is teaching a class, and I can sleep peacefully at his back. His desk was in front of me, so I could sleep hiding. Unfortunatelly, sometimes he was also sleeping in a class, so we two were told off sometimes strictly and sometimes softly, it depended on teachers so I tried to sleep in a class that generous and not so strict teachers teached.
Second, we two had almost same hobbies. I loved computer games and softwares we have played were also same. In lunch time, we often talked about computer games with other friends. One day I asked him to lend me one of his softwares and he agreed to bring it to school and I received it in lunch time and we had English class in the afternoon that was one of my most scareful nightmare. When the teacher was walking around in the class room reading a textbook, I was sleeping at his back as ever. The teacher found me sleeping and asked me to read the rest of sentences that he read. I was so surprised and dropped his software from my desk.
There was so long silence in the classroom.
"What is this" said the teacher.
"Sorry" I said and I heard Mocchan laughing silently.
I was made to write a paper and the software returned to me with my diploma at the graduation celemony. I gave it back to him after the graduation and he did not get angry because he forgot the software.
There are other many memories about him, but I guess this sentence would be too long to read so I quit here. If you like to know other memories about him, Plese ask me.
Anyway, if I receive an invitation to the reunion of my high school, I would feel happy because I think I could meet him and talk about our high school days.

  3. This is Tohma.

I guess Daiki and Tomohiro had a great time in their high school days.
I also had good memories about my friends in my high school days. But I also had had a hard time in my high school.
I believe that I'm here because my friends got along with me and supported me. I appreciate for them very much. So, I would like to attend school reunion.

I would introduce one of my high school memories.
I belonged to high school football club. This club is so strong and be in the competition( All Japan High School Soccer Tournament) every year. Before belonging to the club, I was confident in myself about technical thing such as dribbling. But such a confidence broke up soon. I found that I'm a man who shouldn't play the club because I'm a low-level player and I'm obviously in another low-league.
I had been a very hard time during playing soccer for three years.
However, I got something important. That are my friends. If I wouldn't have played soccer in the club, I could't make friends in that school. Even if I suck at playing soccer, my friends always got along with me.
And now I keep in touch with my friends in high school.
Every time I go back to Hirosihima I go out to drink with him.
There are more memories in high school days but I would like to stop writing because it may be so long...

  4. Tohma, I have experienced a situation like yours, so I know how you felt at that time. But, I am glad to hear that you are on good terms with them now.

I would be happy to go to my high school reunion if I got an invitation because I could meet my friends.
Let me tell you guys why I really like my high school days.

Those days, I spent the time practicing Kendo, hanging out with my friends and maybe studying.
Regarding Kendo, I had to practice it every day. My teacher was so strict that I thought I wanted to quit the club many times. But, I respected him and he taught me a lot. I wish I could have a beer or something with him.

Also, I could make funny friends who had their own unique character. My school had 400 students a grade, about 1200 students in all, so I could not know all of them. However, some of them were my bosom friends. Thanks to them, I could get over my difficulties.
I can’t thank people who really did a lot for me enough.

Anyway, I would absolutely go to the reunion.

  5. Hi, this is Yuu.

Everyone's high school life sounds great to me. I was living a comfortable life in my high school days the same as you.

My classmates were good companion to me. In my class, there were various types of people and some of them were strange. Especially my close friend was funny. She and I were different type of character and we had differnt liking but we were getting along very well with each other. I always really laughed with her and thanks to her, I could extend my taste.

Whenever I go back to my hometown, I go to see them. And every time I feel lighter at heart when I see them.

If I got an invitation to my high school union, I would be very happy to go because I want to see and enjoy being with them.

  6. I feel all of you spent good school days. And to my amazement, most of you say go to the reunion. But I don't, so let me write about this.

If I got on invitation to my high school reunion, I would feel very glad. However I don't think I take part in it.

In formal reunion, it is necessary to hear some speeches which are rigid and luck of interest, to greet our teacher. I have to take great care with many things. I don't like a sociable atmosphere of formal reunion which takes part in many people.
In fact, one of my university friend had a reunion of her high school and she went last month. She said it was not so fun than she imagined because she had to communicate with men who she had not been met and speak.

It is sure that if I go to the union, I can meet high school friends and I can spend good time with them. However, this is possible even if not participating in an official reunion. I only have to participate in the post-party party of the reunion, or take part in class and club reunion.
I was belonging tennis club at high school, and practiced hard every day though not so strong. Senior and junior, all of us are getting along very well with each other. And we have OB meeting. There are various generation members, so I am happy to hear the story of senior's work and of high school days at that time.

Anyway, I don't go formal reunion. But I would like to go to informal and small-scale it and want to enjoy a lot talking about school days.

  7. This is Toru.

Satoru,Tohma and terumi, I can understand how your high school was hard and busy because I was also belong to the soccer club,so I had to practice to play school and study for the next day. My high school days were so busy for me, so I often felt stress.

Anyway,I will write a comment of this topic.

If I got the invitation of the high school reunion, first of all,I will send E-mails to my friends to make sure whether they will join it or not.
If there is none of my friends attend it,I might do so neither.

However, actually,I would like to go to the reunion because if I miss this chance, I think I might not be able to meet them forever. One of the person who were in our same great passed away this year. So I think we shouldn't miss this chance to meet our friends!

Moreover,I think it is a perfect opportunity to talk to people who couldn't contact very much because of busy in high school days. I regret that I can't talk to everyone because, you know,I was so busy to study and club activity. So I don't wanna miss the precious chance!!

That is why,I would like to go to the reunion. However if none of my acquaintances attend it, I also won't.

  8. Good evening,I'm Yoko.
I envey you who want to go to reunion. They had a very good time at high school.I really really envey you. And, Satoru, how about joining Kendo at university??We will welcom you!

I won't accept an invitation.I went to private girls' junior high school and high school.I hate my school. I think the time which spent 6 years is the worst time.
You know, I don't like talk about other people. The gils like talking about their friends. And they also like this'I met really good and smart boy on the train in this morning!' They talk about the man more than 1week! I can't understand why they can talk about one thing such a long time!
In addition, I hate the tone of a school. My friends are very quiet. And we had some strange rule.I introduce you one of them.the rule is 'Don't go to KARAOKE if you did't go with your parent'You will think it is strange!I think most (all?)of the high school students go to KARAOKE with friends! I've never heard people who go to KARAOKE with friends and parents! I once broke the rule and my mother has to go to my school to talk with my teacher. I think it is very absurdly!
I can't make a good association with my home-room teacher. She is my teacher for 6 years. She was really kind me when I had a good mark at practice examination. But I can't have a good mark, she chaged her tune. I don't like her attitude. She is an English teacher so I don't like English and I did't study English when I was a high school student.
Moreover, I think I don't fit girls' school.
I don't like my high school days so I will refuse the reunion invitation.

  9. Mayumi Matsumoto2009年10月27日 23:44

    Hi, this is Mayumi.

I understood that some of you have very good experience and memories in high school.

Yoko, I also think your school rule is a little strange.

Thoma, Satoru, Terumi and Toru, I understand your feeling Because I belonged to basketball club in junior high school. My coach and older members were very strict and practice were very very hard. So I always practice tearing. But I could strong and made a good friends there. So I have a plan to go to reunion in junior high school in this winter vacation.

And I also want to go to reunion in high school, if my friend go. In my high school, I learned the importance of friend and I could make a lot of friends. Thanks to my friends, I can be here now. When I fail my entrance examination for univercity, I was shocked greatly and didn't know what to do. I couldn't talk and meet my families. At that time, My friends were calling and mailing me all the time. I was saved by my friends. SO I am very very thankful for my friends.
Now when I go back my hometown, I always meet my friend. But some of my friends are busy and I can't meet. I definitely meet my friends. So if I have chance to go to a reunion, I'd like to go.

  10. I am Masayoshi.

    Humm...

I will give my coments to Toru.
I agree to Toru's oppinion because Japanese people included me are worry that our old friends are atending or not.
If I attend high school reunion and I understand that there was no people who I are my acquaintance, what should I? Surely I feel missing and sadness.
So we are tend to make sure whether they will join it or not.

For me,I am not interested in high school reunion.
Formal reunion reminds me of boredom. For example,
lots of greeting,,,the president of reunion.

Then when I start to work, it is hard to much for reunion.
Especially if I will live another town,I must move.

Anyway I do not want to attend high school reunion.

  11. Hi, I'm Haruki.
    I'm sorry to late.
I'll give my coments to MASAYOSI.
Of cause, it is hard to much for reunion if I start to work. However, You can meet some friend if you attend the high school reunion. Do not you want to meet a friend?

For me, friends at high school days are precious people. Even if I'm so busy, I'd like to attend the high school reunion.
