Blog Homework 4: Chalk and cheese... relationship breaker or interest maker?

Hi everyone,

In today’s class we listened to some conversations featuring people talking about relationship problems – problems with their friends or partners. The title of this unit is “like chalk and cheese” which means “to be completely different”. In the case of the characters in today’s conversations, it seems that “being like chalk and cheese” can be the cause of many relationship problems.

What do you think? Is it better for friends (or boyfriends and girlfriends) to be similar, in other words to have similar personalities, hobbies and values? Or is it okay for friends “to be like chalk and cheese” – to have different personalities, hobbies and values?

Please share your opinion. Give reasons, examples and detail to support your ideas. Please make your blog comment by Tuesday (24th November) midnight.

Also, before you write your comment, please read the comment of the person who wrote before you, and comment on their ideas.

Don’t forget to do your language awareness homework too!!

Have a good week,
Kris

  1. Hi, This is Tohma.

I think it's better for friends to be have similar hobbies or values. Because I can talk with them easily and enjoy. In addition, I can share a lots of ideas with friends who have similar values.

But on the other hand, I think that I should have friends who have different values to know some ideas from different perspective. And I may be able to enrich my view.
This is why that I think it's important to have friends who have different values.

  2. Hi,this is Toru.

I agree with Tohma. I think it is important to exchange our opinions with people who have different values because I can get variety of viewpoint.

Sometimes, there will break out argues however when I face the difficulties, that experience will helpful to get over it.

In case of the relation with girlfriend,I will prefer the girl who have similar values of mine just because I don't wanna argue with her.

But I think the most important thing is that trying to tell my opinions or feelings to people even though they have different values.

  3. Hi,this is Daiki.
I agree with both Tohma and Toru.It is so important to have friends who have diferrent ways of thinking so that you can expand your point of view.

Personally,I think it might be better for friends to be like chalk and cheese.

Surely,it sometimes gives you stress and fatigue because of different personalities.
I also think having friends who have similar personality is very important.

However, having friends who have different values sometimes lets you know something importamt that you've never imagined.

I have a friend like that.Unlike me,he's so brave and expresses what he thinks directly to others, regardless of who they are.
I usually express my feelings as indirectly as possible so that I won't offend others,so it's hard to imgine to do like that.
Thus,he adds some spice to my life, and aalso lets me know that it is important to be honest if you really don't want to cause problems.

That's why I think it is important to have friends who have different values.

  4. Hello, I’m Terumi.

I agree with Toru’s idea; telling our opinions to all people is most important. It will enrich our life.

I usually don't like friends who have different thought because I can’t enjoy with them.

Recently, I went to shopping with 3 friends. However we finally divided into two groups because our hobby is different. Then, I felt better with friends who have same interest.

Naturally, it is important to get along with friends of different idea. However friendship with similar sense is more valuable.
We should mixed up with various people on our daily life. So, I want to spend the private time with friends who have similar values, and want to talk about our hobby.

Someone may concern about don’t having friend who have different personality makes us dull. However talking about one topic in detail can be also broaden our view. So I think having friend who have different value is not so important.

  5. Good evening, I'm Yoko.

I also agree with them who write the comments before me.
I think it is not good for friends to be like chalk and cheese.I also have the experience like Terumi.

When I was a junior high school student, I went to Kyoto on my school trip. I wanted to see old temples and to drink Japanese tea. But, friends of my group don't want to do that. They really really like shopping. In majority rule, I had to go shopping with them. I really wanted to visit many temple as many as possible, so I spent very boring time.

Of course, I think it is good for you sometimes to share opinions and to do something with people who are like chalk and cheese . But I think you sould not be with the people to be chalk and cheese every day. You will be so tired.

  6. Hi, this is Tomohiro.

I agree with Terumi and Yoko. I think having friends with similar personalities will help us get along with our friends. But I think Tohma, Toru and Daiki have very interesting points about this topic; I think it is bebeficial to have friends with different way of thinking because we can learn other point of view that we have never come up with.

Some people say that having friends with different personalities or way of thinking will be great benefit for them because they think they can learn variety of way of thinking or something they did not know through conversation. However, I still insist that having friends with similar personalities or way of thinking is far more beneficial. There are three reasons for this.
First advantage of having friends with similar personalities or way of thinking is that you can get along with such friends very easily. In my case, I felt difficult to talk to my classmates when I was a freshman in high school, but one day one of my classmates spoke to me and we talked for a while. While I was talking with him, I felt easy to talk to him because our hobbies or favorite things are quite similar, also I felt our way of thinking was also very alike. Since the day, we often met and talked about many things even we were devided into different classrooms.
As I said above, I felt that my and his way of thinking or attitudes toward surroundings were quite similar. So even though I had nothing to talk to him, I could easily to speak to him and our conversation lasted so long. From this experience, I learned that similar personalities can encourage people to get along with well and that’s why I prefer to have friends with similar personalies or way of thinking.

  7. Tomohiro, your opinion is so interesting.

I think it's okay for friends to be like chalk and cheese because it seems to be fun to share their opinions each other. I like talking to people who have different personalities to broaden my horizons. I think I can learn a lot from such people.

However, it's better for my girlfriend to be similar to me. Personally, if we are quite different, we often have a quarrel over nothing.

Although it's the best way for boyfriens and girlfriends to accept their faults one another so that they can get along well, actually it's so hard.

That's why I am not sure which is better.

    Hi, this is Mayumi.

I know all the comments before me.

In my case, if I have a few friends who have a similar value or hobby,I also want to have friends who have different ideas.

Of course I can relax and easy to talk when I am with friends who is similar.
However I can spread my view of thinking and sometimes improve my weak points when I am with not similar. And I can enjoy listenning and seeing other fields.
    There are some reason.

When I go shopping with friends who have different my hobby, I can also enjoy because I can know other kinds of clothes or things.

And a few years ago, I have a friiend who is very different to me. She was very very talkative and amusing and doesn't a honest person. So I didn't know what to do at first but thanks to her, I can become a little cheerful. From this experience I can change my thinking of friend.

However the best friends is good who is not like chalk and cheese.

  9. I had met a lot of people with a different character from me, and I became close friends with some of them.

In my high school student, my best friend and I were exactly like chalk and cheese. We had different hobbies and our view were diametric opposite at first. However I was getting on well with her and we didn't have a quarrel at all. To be frank, I am easily influenced by around people and her thinking affected my thinking. And I eventually have parallel hobbies and views with her. I could know some new field and she aroused my interest.

Maybe in my case is rare matter, but work in cooperation with different type's person is interesting and wonderful, I think. Everyone thinks that make similar view's friend is better, but I think like chalk and cheese is better. If he/she isn't too bad person, you should try to make friends with opposite person.

  10. Hellow. I'm Haruki.

I checked all the comments. Everyone's comment was so interesting. Of cause, it is better situation that there is nothing in the difference between you and friend . However, people has some difference between you and friend. It is reasonable situation, because there is no man whose character is same with other people.

In my case, I haven’t met the man who has the same with my hobbies. Maybe… My hobby is sounds like a unique things, so I couldn't meet him. There is no wrong things, because I have differences from you. Sometimes people say that everyone have difference but everyone is good. That is. It is not important to have similar personalities, hobbies and values. I'm okay for friends “to be like chalk and cheese”

  11. Hi I am Masayoshi.

    Yuu,I agree with you.
If you and your best friend are same thinking and same worth ,you two can not develop as "best friends".
Because you two have been quite considerate for each other, you could keep getting on weel.

For me I have the opinion near the classmates
But when I am thinking now, almost of all friend are chalk and cheese's relationship.

Surely having common sense of values is easy to getting well on friendship because we need not discussing.

But I think it is important for the role of friend to compensate for my faults.Real friend is not usually same sense of values.

That' why the friend and I should be like chalk and cheese.

    This is a digression but
Because I cannot hit on a good ideas,it took 4hours to write it. ;+)
